Hawk's Talons too Tough For the Bears! In their first district game, the Harlingen South Hawks tennis team reaped the benefits of all the hard work they did over the summer (see our "Stillman Summer" article for more). Armed with fitness, proper form, strategy and their ferocious spirit; the Hawks defeated the P.S.J.A. (Pharr, San Juan, Alamo) bears tennis team. The first match we were able to see was the girls doubles. The doubles team of Catherine Weber and Sara Perez was in a word...awesome! The Bear's girl's doubles team just could not find an answer to the agressiveness of Weber or the power of Perez' groundstrokes. Upon watching this "dynamic duo", one could not help but wonder if we were looking at the next regional qualifying girl's doubles team. The Harlingen team was able to keep the Bears from getting on the scoreboard with a very lopsided 6-0, 6-0 victory. Next we saw the boy's doubles team of Shane Kyral and Tomas Stillman. Tomas Stillman ( we profusely apologize to for mispelling his name for the past couple of months - Sorry, Tomas!) who was repeatedly attacked |

| with very powerful groundstrokes by the Bear's boy's doubles team, was easily able to return almost every missile that was shot at him. Time after time the spectators were amazed at the sound of the canon-like shots the Bears would hit, followed by the sounds of frustration when their best shots were easily returned. Shane Kyral was equally impressive with his awareness and his transition game, easily maneuvering his way to the net to put away most balls that came his way. | |
Overall, it was a decisive victory for the Harlingen Hawks. Some of the U.S.T.A. (United States Tennis Association) men's league were very impressed and commented the Hawk's are the team to beat this season. With Catherine Weber the only high school senior we saw playing in this match, we can't but wonder if the Hawks will be the team to beat for the next few years to come. |
