Hawks Crush the Cougars! The Harlingen Hawks crushed the Edinburg Cougars 19 - 0 on Saturday morning, October 4th. The girls played their tennis methodically (we kinda like that word around here) and disposed of their opponents quite easily. When I arrived to cover the game at the Harlingen H.E.B. Tennis Center, I was asked by one of the parents if I ever tired of praising the Harlingen teams. Quite frankly, I don't. I replied that in covering high school tennis (along with USTA and other tennis-related "stuff") I rarely come across teams that give training and preparation the attention the sport deserves. The boys side would be a workout. Although they pulled out a victory in each of the matches, the Cougars managed to slightly push the Hawks in this division. Edinburg just wasn't able, however, to sustain a consistent (there's that word) attack. And, Harlingen just outlasted them to, once again, shut another team out. The surprise of the day came with Shane Kyral's impressive performance in boys singles. It was the final match of the day; and he was truly challenged, losing the second set and having to play out a third. Kyral went through a Stillman summer (See our article by the same name in the "news" section) and out-lasted, out-rallied and followed his coaching extemely well. Hitting his elegant one-handed backhand and slicing his forehand, Kyral's variety was proving to be too much for his opponent in the third set. Kyral's variety was soon countered when his opponent began to serve and volley and chip and charge desperately trying to take the net away and forcing Kyral to hit perfect passing shots. Shane countered the counter by looping balls to his feet as he would come in and forced him to stay back. On ocassion, Kyral would even mix it up by slamming short balls cross court instead of the usual donw the line - keeping his opponent off balance and guessing. In the end, Shane Kyral would violently take control of the net and finished the match by putting away his opponent with a short, angled crosscourt volley. Cheers would resound from parents and fellow team mates (who would clap in unison whenever they saw him get down on himself). Upon completion, Kyral was met by his coaches for...what?....more coaching? Yes, while the match was still clear in his mind, the coaching staff takes no chances! Isn't that what coaches are supposed to do? The Hawks met on the court, after the match and their goodbyes to the Edinburg Cougars, in a team huddle. Coach Stillman informed them that they have much work still to do and some very important matches ahead. In other words, be ready for heavy workouts. No taking it easy for athletes that have winning in mind. The coaching staff would leave the team huddle and Catherine Weber would lead them proclaiming, "Nobody misses practices"! and a triumphant "Go Hawks" battle cry. The Harlingen Hawks face the other Edinburg team on Tuesday, October 7 at the Harlingen H.E.B. Tennis Center. It will be the final match until the, much anticipated, "Civil War!" match against the Harlingen Cardinals team on October 11th. |
