Civil War
The War Between North and South

Week after week goes by, and RGVtennis.com has been covering the Harlingen high school tennis home games that are being played at the Harlingen H.E.B. Tennis Center. One thing has become verily apparent, as foes fall one by one, the war to end the wars can only be fought by Harlingen against Harlingen.

In a recent interview, I asked Noe Stillman, coach of the Harlingen Hawks, "Is there a team in the Rio Grande Valley that can give you any problems?". To which he immediately replied, "Yeah, the Harlingen Cardinals. They're not a team we are going to take lightly. We'll be ready".

They'll be ready. To most of us that are privy to the Harlingen Hawk's workout, it sounds like an understatment. Here is a coach that barely gave his team a day off in the summer to get them ready for the season. The hard work has definitely paid off in a , so far, lossless season.

Across the street, however, are their arch-nemesis - The Harlingen Cardinals, who are having a workout of their own. With players like Bracken and O'Reagan, Coach Tanamachi walks with an air of pride and confidence. The Cardinals perform countless drills, practice myriads of serves, and submerge themselves fully into the waters of strategy.

Is it a battle worth watching? Would you watch the Battle of Gettysburgto see what all the fuss President Lincoln made was all about? Would you skip Robert E. Lee and the Battle of Chancellorville? Great men like Ulysses S. Grant, Braxton Bragg, John Pope, and Robert E. Lee spent many sleep-challenged nights training and worrying about their men and the battles to come. Like them the coaching staff of the Harlingen Cardinals and Harlingen Hawks are doing the same. Come October 11, 2008; all of their hard work will come to a head as the Harlingen teams commence their "not so civil" war. Admission is free at the Harlingen H.E.B. Tennis Center October 11, 2008 at 8: 00 a.m.
