Copyright 2008 www.rgvtennis.com On April 10th, 2008, I was able to interview Catherine Weber
from the Harlingen South High School tennis team.  We had
seen her play a couple of times out at the Harlingen HEB Tennis
Center, and we were always impressed with her strokes.  In fact,
just that morning, we had used some of the pictures that we took
of her work outs to demonstrate a closed two-handed backhand
on the lessons portion of our website.  Now here she was in front of me.
The first thing you notice about Catherine, of course, is her height.
She is pretty tall for a young girl.  In tennis, that spells advantage!   I immediately felt sorry for whomever tries to lob or pass her at the net.  I begin our interview  and make up my mind not to ask how tall she is.

RGVT:  Ok, Catherine, how old are you? and what grade are you in?
CW:  I'm 17 years old and I am a junior.

RGVT:  In district you got what place and in what division?
CW:  I got second place in girl's doubles.

RGVT: Is this your first year to qualify for regional competition?
CW:  This is my second year.  I also went to regionals last year.

RGVT: How did you do up at regionals last year?
CW:  We didn't do too bad; we got to the quarter finals.

RGVT: Wow!  How do you think you are going to do this year?
CW:
This year I hope to do pretty well, and hopefully make it to state.

RGVT: Awesome!  Do you have any plans for the future in tennis? Are you thinking
about college or playing tennis in college?

CW:
I'm going to try and hopefully play for at least a division two school.  I'm going to try to get a scholarship to one of those colleges. It would be nice to have a division one school look at me and hopefully pick me up.  That's always the goal.

RGVT: I was just talking to Thomas (Stillman) and he was talking about going professional. Is that something  you're thinking about as well?
CW:  I want to get college done first and see how it goes. Maybe I will go pro.  I will have to see how it goes and how I am doing compared to my competitors.  It would be nice.  If not, go on to medical school.

RGVT: How are your grades?
CW:  My grades are in the top ten percent of my class...maybe in the top five percent, probably. So, I think that's fairly good.

RGVT: Does your coach talk to you about your grades and keeping your grades up?  Any talks about anything like that?
CW:  No.  There's no need to talk to me about anything like that. I've always known my grades come first.

RGVT: That's fantastic!  Ok.  What are your goals as far as tennis is concerned? Is there anything specific that you're working on?
CW:  I want to go to state...this year and next.

RGVT:  What about technique-wise?  Anything in your game that you are working on
that you would like to see improve?

CW:  Um....I need to get my serves down to get them more consistent and with more power. I'm trying to work on hitting different kinds of serves in there and mix it up.  I definitely want to be able to use more of a variety.

RGVT:  Have you taken lessons? I see you at the Harlingen HEB Tennis Center sometimes.
CW:  Yes.  I take lessons from a couple of different people and learn from as many people as I can, including Don over at the tennis center.

RGVT: Ok.  Talk to me about your coach, Coach Stillman.  How do you like your coach?
CW:
(smiles) He's great!  He keeps us going and motivated and tells us to take pride in the work that we put in.

RGVT: How does he go about motivating you?

CW:  (Gets a serious look on her face) If you don't do what you are supposed to be doing out here, you'd better be ready to run.  You'd better be ready to work if you're going to be on these courts.

RGVT: What happens if you don't do what you are supposed to do?
CW:
Well, obviously, you are going to get ignored.  He's not going to waste his time
on you if you are not going to be putting in your part of the effort. You put in the
work and he will do everything to try and help you out.

RGVT: Ok.  Just a couple of more questions (Did I mention it was really hot?) As far as the program here at Harlingen South is concerned, what would you like to see improve?
CW:  I'd like better courts, maybe some lights.  I would really love to see some changing areas out here, because we have to walk a long ways to change and our courts need to be resurfaced. If we need to change or go to the bathroom, we have to run all the way to the school.

RGVT: What do you do about water and staying hydrated out here?  Is there a water fountain?
CW:
Water, we have to go get our own jug.  We bring our own personal waters, and Coach brings out the big Gatorade ice chest.

RGVT: Ok, Catherine, this is going out all over the world.  Is there anything you would like to say to everyone that will be reading or hearing your interview?
CW:
Just to have fun, work hard, and have a lot of determination and pride in what you are doing.

I watch Catherine walk away and begin her work out as I wait for her Coach.  I'm excited about her interview and about her future, no matter what she decides to succeed at.  I'm sure we will be seeing and hearing a lot more from Catherine in the future.  She's one to look out for.  We wish her all the best in regionals and state
and everything else she decides she wants to pursue.  Go Catherine!
