Glucosamine

"I'm gonna have to stop playing tennis, man. I just can't take the pain in my knees from the hard courts. I just can't do it". Those were familiar words to me. My friend, we will call him "David" (since that is his real name), had been a virtual stranger to the tennis courts. Lately, we were seeing him less and less; and, as we played doubles, the "painful" truth was revealed. He was having trouble moving due to the pain in his knees. I would like to say that I was a true gentleman and hit every shot right to him so that he would not have to run, but I'm afraid I remembered every unkind shot he ever hit against me and ran him to no end (gotta love that drop shot!). I made it up by telling him of the wonders of Glucosamine. I had my own "I'm gonna quit" story.

Several years ago, I made that very same exclamation to a tennis friend that is over 70 years old. "I don't see how you do it to play with so much pain!", I said. He looked at me incredulously and asked, "You mean, you play tennis and you don't take glucosamine"?!!? I had no idea what he was talking about; but, if it worked for someone of his age, I knew it would more than likely work for me. I began to take it and my pain began to subside after about a month. So how exactly does it work?

Glucosamine Comes in Many Forms and Sizes - Check Labels!

Glucosamine is a compount that naturally develops and repairs cartilage in your joints. As we get older, our bodies production of this compound slows down. If you are over 40 years old, it might be a good idea to begin adding this supplement to your daily routine. Usually, there are three supplements that are taken together for knee pain: Glucosamine, Chondroitin, and MSM; which help with the lubrication of your joints. Glucosamine has been proven effective in easing osteoarthritis pain, rehabilitating cartilage, renewing synovial fluid, and repairing joints that have been damaged from osteoarthritis.

It is very important to compare price per day and not price per glucosamine product, as many companies try to fool you by providing 60 capsules or 32 oz. and not telling you until after you purchased that you must use 6 capsules or 2 oz. per day. Be careful to always compare price per day. Last thing you want to do is to buy a "cheap" bottle or one that has more pills in it, only to find out that they recommended dose per pill is very low and you have to take a handful a day. A little math goes a long way!

In addition to the supplements, the best thing you can do to alleviate knee pain is to lose weight. You would be surprised how much less pain you will have in your knees by losing as little as ten pounds. Think about it, if you are overweight (you all know who you are!) and you are pounding the courts for hours on end, imagine how much stress that puts on your joints.

What happened to my friend David? Sad to say, he didn't listen to me and no longer plays. Your tennis doesn't need to come to an end; and, with glucosamine, you may just find the supplement you need to enjoy the game for years to come.
